(Douglas County, Ore.) The Douglas County Board of Commissioners encourage Douglas County residents to attend and enjoy the 2023 Yoncalla Rodeo at the all new Yoncalla Rodeo and event center located at 8501 Rice Valley Road in Yoncalla on August 11 and 12, 2023. The Yoncalla Rodeo is a Northwest Professional Rodeo Association (NPR) and American Professional Rodeo Association (ARPA) sanctioned event with participants hailing from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California, and will feature bareback riding, team roping, break away roping, steer wrestling, tie down roping, barrel racing, wild cow milking, saddle bronc and bull riding. There will also be events for kids each day at 2:00 pm including junior barrels, mutton busting, calf riding and steer riding. Rodeo gates open at 1:00 pm each day. “Some of my best memories as a kid were going to the Yoncalla Rodeo with my dad. This is a fantastic project and I hope that the next generation and all future generations can continue to pass the love of the rodeo onto their family and friends,” stated Commissioner Tim Freeman.
The Yoncalla Rodeo and Equestrian Association (YREA) secured initial funding with a grant from the Douglas County Commissioners in April of 2022 to help purchase and develop a vacant piece of property for a brand-new event center that will be the permanent home for the Yoncalla Rodeo, as well as provide opportunities for youth rodeos, 4-H events and FFA shows. The land for the new Yoncalla Rodeo and event center, located at the corner of Eagle Valley and Wilson Road was secured by Martin Thompson, who negotiated the purchase with the Basset family. The Yoncalla Rodeo has been a staple North Douglas County tradition since 1946.
YREA’s president, Randy Thompson (and Martin’s son), along with association members then garnered a tremendous amount of community support, recruited volunteers, and acquired the necessary funding to make the Yoncalla Rodeo and event center project a reality. “This is an amazing thing for our community,” stated Randy Thompson. “I continue to be blown away at the amount of support we have received for this project. The new arena is amazing, and I believe we can keep the rodeo tradition alive for many years to come!”
Yoncalla Rodeo tickets can be purchased at the gate while local food and beverage vendors will be on-site during the two-day event. Adults are $15, Seniors are $10, Kids 6-13 are $5 and kids 5 & under are free.
